By Tero Mustala and Leslie Guth, SCOPE Alliance
The SCOPE Alliance is an industry group committed to accelerating the deployment of carrier grade base platforms for service provider applications through the creation of profiles and gap analyses for telecom industry specifications. The profiles help building block vendors navigate the options found in industry specifications. They point out the key content and characteristics needed for actual telecom applications. To date, SCOPE’s activities have included defining profiles and gaps for PICMG 3.0 - AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC, and MicroTCA. Now SCOPE Alliance has developed and published case studies that highlight how hardware vendors are using its profile to develop AdvancedTCA products that meet the Network Equipment Providers’ (NEP) requirements.
The new studies showcase SCOPE member companies that have taken the AdvancedTCA profile and used it to develop products. In one study, SCOPE’s guidelines allowed a company to make its AdvancedTCA blades, switches, and nodes compliant and interoperable with other third-party equipment within the Carrier Grade Base Platform without needing to continually check that its development was proceeding correctly. Another study details how a member company used the SCOPE definitions to ensure that hardware designs were suitable for all NEPs, and to bring those designs to market faster and at lower cost.
SCOPE has also published case studies that showcase its interactions with other industry organizations such as the Service Availability Forum, the Linux Foundation, and the Communications Platforms Trade Association. These studies delve into real-world examples of how SCOPE’s work is enabling the COTS ecosystem. To download the studies, visit www.scope-alliance.org/news/casestudies.
